We have been learning how to write an essay since we were in the 3rd grade. However, unfortunately there are a very few of us who really know how to write a 5 paragraph essay. The reason is because in school and probably throughout college, we have used the 3 paragraphed essay to get us going. The three paragraphed essay is simple as it is simply divided into 3 sections which are the introduction, body and conclusion.
The 5 paragraph essay, however, is not as simple as that. But it can be if you just apply a few simple rules to it. What do I mean? Well, a 5 paragraph essay is one which has 2 paragraphs for introduction and conclusion, and 3 paragraphs for the body. Let me explain the complete process to you in a step by step manner:
- 1st Paragraph
The first paragraph of your essay will be the introduction. The introduction of a 5 paragraph essay will be the same as any other essay. There is one principle or rule you have to follow when you are writing the introduction of any essay, and that is to impress and grab the reader’s attention so that he keeps on reading until the very last line.
- 2nd Paragraph
In the first paragraph, you also have the responsibility of stating the thesis and basically introducing the topic to the reader. Once you have done this, start bringing up your major points and sub points. The objective of the 2nd paragraph of the 5 paragraph essay is to talk about the first and most major point that you want to discuss in the essay.
- 3rd and 4th Paragraph
The 3rd and 4th paragraphs will be the same as your 2nd one, that is, they will have major points along with sub or supporting points that prove the claim. Remember that whichever kind of essay you are writing, it is extremely important that you keep in mind that the information you are jotting down is real and reliable. This is the reason why you are always advised to first look and read books on the subject instead of running to the internet because often it is not such a reliable source.
Another point to remind yourself of is that the argument or points that you are putting forward need to be real. This means that these have to actually exist otherwise your reader is not going to take you seriously.
- 5th Paragraph
The fifth paragraph, which will of course also be your last, will be the conclusion. The conclusion, as usual has to be written in a way through which the reader can remember the message that you have tried to send even after he has finished reading the essay.
