How to Write a Compare and Contrast Essay

The level of your education doesn’t really matter, if you are enrolled into a school, college or high school, then chances are very high that you are going to be given a compare and contrast essay. Most of these compare and contrast essays are given as home assignments but if there ever comes a time when you need to write it in class or in a test, then you need to be sure that you know how to write a compare and contrast essay.

The objective of my article today is to provide you with some help that will assist you when you are writing the essay. The fact is that if you take your compare and contrast essay easily, then it will be easy and simple for you, but if you make it hard then it is going to be so.

• The very first thing that you need to do is to read and properly understand the items that you have to compare and contrast in your essay. Remember that it is very important that you understand these items because this is what is going to help you with the comparing and contrasting. If you are discussing something that has not been taught in class then make sure you go through a lot of texts and reliable research sources so that you can find out as much as possible.

• In the compare and contrast essay, you first need to compare the two items that are given. What this means is that you need to find out the similarities between the two objects. For example let us say you are writing a compare and contrast essay on Pepsi and Coca-cola, here the similarities are obvious.

• Next, you need to contrast the two things, that is, you need to tell the difference that exists between the two items. Once again you can say that Coca-cola is sweeter than Pepsi and so they differ in this point.

• Now it is time to think about which you think is more important, the differences or the similarities? Remember that you have to consider both but it mostly happens that there are more differences and so you can go with whatever you think is best.

• Write an introduction like you would write for any other essay where you define the purpose of the essay and give a short overview of the complete essay to your audience or reader.

• Once you have decided if the differences or similarities are more important, start the body of your essay with the opposing point, for example if you are in support of the differences then start pointing out the similarities and trickling down to the differences.
