Tips on Writing a Profile Essay

There are maybe a 100 different kinds of essays and one of those is the profile essay which explains a particular subject, place or person to its readers. In general and global terms, the profile essay is both objective as well as expressive. What this means is that even though it analyses a subject objectively; the author can also bring in his own opinions on the topic.

A profile essay is very different from an autobiographical essay as it is not just personal experiences and thoughts but instead mainly about research and findings. The reason why a lot of people face difficulty while writing a profile essay is because they do not know that this kind of an essay urges its writer to gather the information and shape it in a way which is easily understandable by the reader. The objective that I have today is to give you tips on writing a profile essay so that you can do it easily the next time around.

1. Carefully Choose the Topic

Great profile essays are often written on people who are ordinary because in fact it depends on the writer how he approaches and examines the personality. Remember that even though writing a profile essay on controversial and distinctive people can be a hit, if you focus on someone who the reader can really identify with, then you will have an essay that will surely be a very interesting read.

2. Create a Good Plan

If you are writing a profile essay on a person, then you will need to interview the person. This interview will not be just one sitting but instead you need to do a couple of sessions with the person so you can be sure that you are getting the most. When conducting the interview, make sure you ask open ended questions rather than close ended and specific questions. The reason this is suggested is because with open ended questions you can have a variety of answers.

3. Don’t be Specific

As mentioned, your profile essay is going to end up being boring if you focus on specific things in the person’s life and personality. You need to paint a very vivid and detailed picture of the subject at hand so that the reader knows the details about their everyday life. Once again, keep in mind that because the profile essay is a creative piece of writing, you do not need to put every description straight forward as this might seem boring.
